Businesses know the power of a good logo. Just think of Apple or McDonalds and it’s their logo that comes first to mind. It’s important though, even for the biggest companies, to update their logo from time to time to keep it fresh and relevant. The same applies to the logo for your school or academy.
Not sure if your school’s logo needs updating? Then take a look at the five warning signs below and see if they apply to your logo.
1. It doesn’t work on modern media
If your logo was designed 20 years ago then chances are it might not be optimized to work well on a website or on the social media sites that your school uses. These days you need a logo that works both in print and web.
2. It no longer represents your school
Schools change as time passes. You used to be the local comprehensive, then you were the specialist sports college and now you’re an academy. Whatever changes your school has undergone there is a good chance that your original logo represents what your school was and not what it is today. If your logo doesn’t reflect what you currently offer then it’s time for a rebranding.
3. It wasn’t professionally designed
If you had a member of staff or friend who designed your logo, but they are not a graphic designer, it might be time for some professional help. Remember your logo is often the first thing someone sees of your school. You use this logo on your website, social media, stationery, prospectus, school sign and, of course, on the uniforms. A professional designer has both the knowledge and skill to help capture the ethos of your school and put it into a memorable design that’s going to work for you.
4. It’s too complicated
There’s a growing trend for logos to become more simplified. One of the main reasons for this is that a logo, which is too busy or complicated, with lots of small details, is less likely to work in different sizes and situations. You need to make sure that your logo won’t lose any detail when it’s scaled down, as it needs to work on your business cards as well as on your entrance sign. The simpler the logo the more chance it is going to be recognized and work at these different sizes.
5. It doesn’t make your school stand out from the crowd
You definitely want to stand out from other schools in the area, so take a look at their logos. Look at the elements, colours and icons used in your logo and theirs. Are they similar? Also be realistic, are they better than yours? If you are answering ‘yes’ to these questions, then you need a new logo.
